Regular orgasms can reduce the risk of prostate cancer, a study has found.
Men who ejaculate more regularly throughout their lives lower their risk of the disease.
The researchers, from Harvard Medical School, did not explain why orgasms could lower prostate cancer risk.
However it has previously been theorised that regular orgasms may flush out cancer-causing chemicals in the prostate.
Another theory is that if sperm is regularly cleaned out to allow new cells to develop, it helps stop the build-up of old cells that might be more likely to turn cancerous.
The prostate is a small satsuma-sized gland located between a man’s penis and his bladder, whose main function is to produce a thick white fluid that is mixed with the sperm produced by the testicles, to create semen.
The new study is the largest to date on the frequency of ejaculation and and prostate cancer.
The researchers found that men in the 40-49 age bracket who ejaculate 21 or more times a month reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 22 per cent.

While the researchers said they were unclear as to why ejaculation lowers the chances of prostate cancer, they called the results ‘particularly encouraging.’
The study followed almost 32,000 healthy men for 18 years, 3,839 of whom later were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Men were asked about their average monthly frequency of ejaculation between the ages of 20 to 29, 40 to 49, and in 1991, the year prior to the questionnaire.
They found that the more frequently a man ejaculated throughout his life, the lower his risk of prostate cancer at all three of these points in time.
This was the case even when they adjusted their results to take factors such as diet, lifestyle and a history of prostate cancer screening into account.
Dr Jennifer Rider, of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said the results are ‘particularly encouraging’ but should be interpreted with caution.
She said: ‘While these data are the most compelling to date on the potential benefit of ejaculation on prostate cancer development, they are observational data and should be interpreted somewhat cautiously.
‘At the same time, given the lack of modifiable risk factors for prostate cancer, the results of this study are particularly encouraging.’
She added more research should be carried out into the specific changes in the prostate caused by ejaculation, to understand how it reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
The research was presented at the American Urological Society annual meeting in New Orleans in May.
More than 1.1 million cases of prostate cancer were recorded in 2012, accounting for around 8 per cent of all new cancer cases and 15 per cent in men, according to figures from the World Cancer Research Fund International.
The causes of prostate cancer are largely unknown, but the chances of developing the disease increase as a man gets older.

Oliver Ilic, 22, from Macedonia, called for help after he was unable to stop the bleeding after he cut off his penis
A man in Macedonia blamed his small penis for his girlfriend breaking up with him and decided to chop it off with a razor.
But after cutting off his organ and throwing it in a bin, 22-year-old Oliver Ilic, was unable to stop the bleeding.
He called emergency services and was taken to a hospital in Kocani, Macedonia, where he told medics he had decided to cut it off because it was no use.
He explained his girlfriend had ended their relationship after telling him he was not good in bed.
Police searched his house and found the severed penis in a bin along with the razor blade he had used.
Local doctors were unable to reattach the organ and Mr Ilac was taken to another hospital in capital Skopje – where surgeons successfully reattached it in a five-hour operation.
But it is too early to know if Mr Ilac’s penis will function properly again.
Another Macedonian man recently chopped off his own penis.
But unlike Mr Ilic, the man flushed it away in the toilet so it was not able to be reattached.
The man, whose name was given as Ete Samuel, was a resident of 14, Ekpo Abasi Lane in Calabar South, while his sex partner, Miss Peace Idorenyin is a resident of 16, Target Street, close to the Calabar Zoo,
The two chose the cheap “short time spot” located at Atu Street for early evening sex session before the incident happened.
A source who witnessed the incident said he was called at about 5 p.m. by the owner of the short time spot to come and help him as he had a “situation which he alone could not handle. So as a good friend I had to get there fast.
“When I got there, I went into the room and saw a young man on the floor with foam coming out of his mouth and I called the police who came and took the corpse to the mortuary and the lady to Atakpa Police Station”.
“I did not kill him as many men have slept with me and they did not die and this was not the first time Ete Samuel was doing it with me.”
According to her, she could have “escaped but since I know I am not the cause of his death, I had to wear him his trousers before calling people to help me.”
She said she noticed that the man was shaking and she thought the man was about reaching orgasm “but when he did not make any move of coming down from my body after some time I pushed him and saw that he was foaming in his mouth.”

It is said that the reason for their so-called divorce is that Wahu cheated and had a child with another man.
He also went in to salaciously inform his readers that Nameless had gone to have a paternity test and to his shock and dismay the child was not his.

Nameless rubbished the divorce and infidelity rumour but what really drove him up the wall was that the blogger dragged his child into this mess.
Nameless said “I think it is unfair for the blog to make up such a story and drag our children into it .Even if it’s about getting hits dragging children into this is insensitive. In conclusion, Wahu and I are not divorcing as said in the blog.
